Milestone 4.13.08


Well, today is our final milestone, and I was looking back at my project from an objective standpoint. Quite frankly, this piece has come from a paper about why manufacturing plants are bad for the environment, to a hands-on activity to help us realize the ways we can do our part in eliminating use of harmful plastics.


Between the last milestone and now, I've been finalizing my final presentation for this piece, whether chosen for capstone night or not, and have decided that I want to create a display room built entirely of old, junked cardboard. Inside this will be a makeshift kitchen. The viewer will be able to physically fit inside of this kitchen, although I might add that I hope they like pizza. I will have examples of all kinds of plastics that have been discarded without any intention of reusing, and examples of alternatives to using those plastics. 

I've added a bulleted list to help break down some of the key elements:

-There will be examples of how canvas bags can hold groceries and be reused, while there are plastic bags strewn all around the place. 

-There will also be seedlings planted in pete moss pots, with vegetable packages made of plastic also surrounding them. 

-Glass milk containers will be in the kitchen as well, with a little placard stating how the cost is roughly the same, after returning the bottles to the local farms or the NLC (local.) Surrounding these will be plastic milk jugs.

-An on faucet water filter to show that you do not need to buy bottled water, also with plastic water jugs around them.

-There will be paper made from recycled cardboard that I made myself this semester.

-I will have a blender present to explain the process of creating paper from the room.


Everything in this room is reused, recyclable, and RECYCLED.


I began with an idea to make this a children's display, but after a brief exchange with Jon, I decided that there can be a more adult theme if chosen for capstone night. This is mainly because I will be shifting audience for the night, once again, if chosen. If I am not, I will be putting this display on the mall I am sure, and will address both children and adults.


I spoke with Debbie at the Wassookeag School, and am planning on putting forth a project with the students that attend the school. This project I feel will be very interesting to young students, as we will take all of the bottles I have mustered from various trash cans, and on the ground, to build a raft that I will ride after the Maine Day parade in the Stillwater river. I could easily put together the raft by myself, but I feel that sometimes we do not considered how many returnables people throw away each day, without any intention of recycling.

The next bit that I worked on may seem a bit redundant, but I spent quite a bit of time determining why my piece is New Media. Through talking with Joline, I began to realize that if she was able to be tenured in New Media, with her concentration being on sustainability, I was moving about things correctly. One thing that did shock me a bit was Joline telling me that sustainability in New Media is considered to be "hip" now, and will most likely remain this way through the Global Warming crisis, at least for the time being.
